Find a container inspector: every IICL-certified inspector in the US, by state
The full US roster, in one place
This page lists every container inspector in the IICL's US directory: 98 people holding 106 active credentials, grouped by state. If a container ever needs a CSC recertification survey to ship internationally, one of these inspectors, or a company employing one, is who performs it; what that survey is and whether you need one at all is the subject of our container certification guide. We could find no other neutral place where this list exists whole, so we publish it and re-verify it quarterly.
IICL Find a Certified Inspector directory, retrieved August 25, 2026. Verified quarterly.
Rows are transcribed as the IICL publishes them, spellings included. Our additions are the state grouping and the merging of inspectors who hold more than one credential into a single entry. The live searches this list came from:
- IICL dry van container inspector search
- IICL chassis inspector search
- IICL refrigerated container inspector search

98 inspectors, 22 states, A to Z
Each entry shows the inspector, the company the directory lists for them (some list none), their city, and a badge per credential with the year that certification runs through. Certifications are five-year; the year on each badge comes from the directory's own expiry date.
5 of the 98 listed inspectors are based in Ohio, Indiana, or Kentucky, the region we deliver containers in. Their state sections are marked below.

No inspector in your state? That is the common case: 28 states have no resident listing. Inspectors travel and depots coordinate; the next section covers how that works in practice.
How to use this list
Contact the company, not just the name
Most inspectors here work for a leasing company, a depot operator, or a surveying firm, and the booking goes through the employer. Where the directory lists no company, the inspector works independently; searching the name plus the city usually finds them.
Ask for an IICL-certified survey, in writing
Say what the survey is for: restoring a CSC examination status so the box can ship. A pass should get you a written examination report and a new NED decal on the plate. Ask up front whether the carrier you plan to book with has accepted their reports before.
Expect the depot to be part of the answer
A survey works over the underside as well as the walls and roof, which means the box usually goes up on a forklift. That is why depots coordinate most surveys: the box, the forklift, and the inspector are in one place. A container sitting on grass at your property is a harder, costlier visit than the same box at a depot.
Know what the survey covers before you book
Corner castings and posts, rails, cross members and the underside, floor, doors and gaskets, panels, roof bows, and weathertightness overall. Our certification guide walks through the whole system, and our step-by-step recertification post covers what happens on survey day.
We sell storage containers. We do not inspect them.
Steel Box Direct sells used wind and water tight containers for storage and on-site use, not certified for ocean shipping. We do not perform inspections, nobody on this list works for us, and a listing here is not an endorsement in either direction: the list is the IICL's, reproduced with attribution because buyers kept asking where to find it. If your plan is storage rather than shipping, no survey is needed at all, which our certification guide explains, and our containers for sale page covers the three sizes we stock.
Asked about container inspectors
How many IICL-certified container inspectors are there in the US?
The IICL directory listed 98 certified inspectors in the United States when we retrieved it on August 25, 2026, holding 106 active credentials between them: 55 for dry van containers, 44 for chassis, and 7 for refrigerated containers. Worldwide, the IICL itself reports more than 8,600 certified inspectors across 72 countries, so the US roster is a small slice of the global one.
What does IICL-certified mean?
IICL certification comes from the Institute of International Container Lessors, the trade body for the major container leasing companies. Candidates pass a proctored exam and renew on a five-year cycle. There is no US government license for container inspectors: 49 CFR 452.3 requires only qualified, trained, and experienced personnel, and in practice the IICL credential is the one ocean carriers recognize when a container needs a recertification survey.
What if my state has no IICL-certified inspector?
That is the common case: the US directory covers 22 states, so 28 states have no resident IICL-certified inspector at all. Inspectors travel, and most surveys are coordinated through container depots, where the box, the forklift, and the inspector meet anyway. Contact the nearest listed company and ask whether they cover your area, and ask the ocean carrier you plan to book with whose reports they accept, because the carrier is the final judge of any survey.
