How Containers Are Delivered
The delivery method depends on your property access. A 65-foot truck combination needs room to maneuver.
Everything about container delivery follows from one fact: the box does not get carried in, it gets driven in. A loaded rig is roughly sixty-five feet of truck and trailer, and it has to reach the exact spot you want the container, then get back out again. Almost every delivery problem we see traces back to somebody measuring the driveway and forgetting the truck also has to leave.
There are two ways the container comes off. Which one your site needs is a question worth settling before you order, not on delivery day, because the answer changes what the driver needs from your property and what the trip costs.
Tilt-Bed Truck
The truck tilts its bed and slides the container off onto the ground. Requires 100+ feet of straight approach.
Crane-Set
A separate crane lifts the container into place. Solves sharp turns, fencelines, or soft ground issues.

Reading your site the way a driver reads it
The checklist above is the short version. Here is what each line actually means when a sixty-five foot combination is sitting at the end of your lane.
The approach, and why straight matters more than long
A tilt-bed does not lower the container down. It raises the front of the bed and lets the box slide off the back while the truck creeps forward out from under it. The container lands in a straight line along the truck's path. That is the whole reason for the 100+ feet of straight approach: the truck needs room for its own length plus the container's, all in a line, with the box ending up where you want it and not where the geometry puts it.
It also means placement is directional. A tilt-bed sets a container along the line the truck was traveling. If you want the doors facing the house, that has to be planned before the truck backs in.
Measure the narrowest point of your route, not the average. Gate posts, a mailbox, a parked truck, a landscape boulder, the corner of the garage. Twelve feet of clearance means twelve feet at the tightest pinch on the whole run.
Overhead, in both places
Fourteen feet of overhead clearance is not just for the lane. When the bed tilts, the raised end reaches higher than the truck stood driving in. So the drop point needs the clearance too. Look up at the spot itself, not only at the branches over the driveway. Service drops to the house, low limbs, a barn overhang, and a basketball hoop are the usual offenders.
Ground: what holds a truck and what only looks like it does
The ground has to support a 30,000 lb truck, and different surfaces fail differently.
Gravel is the friendliest surface we deal with. It drains, it spreads load across the tires, and it recovers if it does get rutted. Packed dirt is firm and fine when it is dry, and it is a different material entirely after two days of rain, when the top few inches turn greasy over ground that is still solid underneath. Grass is the one that fools people. Turf looks like a surface, but it is a thin mat over topsoil, and topsoil holds water. A lawn that felt solid under your boots in the morning can cut into ruts under loaded tires by afternoon.
If any part of the route crosses a septic tank or leach field, tell us before delivery. Know where yours is. Loaded trucks and septic systems are not a good combination, and the driver has no way to see it.
What "level" actually means
A shipping container is not a solid block. It is a steel frame that carries its load at the four corner castings, with the walls and roof stiffening the box between them. When all four corners sit in the same plane, the frame stays square and the doors swing and latch the way they were built to.
Set that same box down with one corner low and the frame twists slightly. It is a small amount of movement, and it lands almost entirely in the door end, because the door opening is the one side of the box with no wall across it. The result is doors that bind, doors that need a shoulder, or doors that will not throw their locking bars all the way home. This is the single most common complaint about a container that is otherwise perfectly sound, and it is a ground problem, not a container problem.
Level side to side is what matters most for the doors. It also helps to keep the box up out of standing water so the underside can dry between rains. If you want the container set on blocking, say so in your quote request. Blocking changes how the box comes off the truck, and it has to be planned before the driver is on your property rather than decided in your driveway.
The week before delivery
Almost all deliveries take about two weeks, and we will give you an honest window before you commit. Use that time. Everything below takes an hour and prevents the expensive version of the problem.
- Walk the route with the pinch points in mind. Trim the branches, move the trailer, ask the neighbor about the truck that parks on the corner.
- Mark the exact spot. Stakes, spray paint, or cones at the four corners. "Over there by the fence" is not a placement.
- Decide which way the doors face and mark that too. Changing it later means moving the container again.
- Look at the ground honestly. If the last rain left standing water where the box is going, that is your answer about the surface.
- Confirm anything you owe your local building office. Permit and zoning requirements vary by county, municipality, and intended use, and confirming them is the buyer's responsibility. Start at our permit overview, then call your local zoning or building department.
- Send photos with your quote request. The driveway, the pinch point, and the spot itself. This is the cheapest insurance in the whole transaction.
Delivery day, start to finish
Somebody should be on site who can point at the spot and make a decision. That is the whole job, and it matters more than it sounds like it does.
- The driver calls ahead. This is your chance to flag anything that changed since you booked, like a washed-out lane or a new fence.
- The driver walks or eyeballs the approach. Drivers are good at this. If something looks wrong to them, listen to it.
- You confirm the spot and the door direction. In person, standing on it. Not by text.
- The truck backs in and sets up. This is the slow part and it is supposed to be slow.
- The container comes off. On a tilt-bed the bed raises and the box slides off as the truck pulls forward. On a crane-set, a separate crane lifts it into place.
- You look at it before the truck leaves. Walk the outside, open the doors, close the doors. If something is wrong, the moment to say so is while the rig is still in the driveway.
The unloading itself is a short part of the visit. Getting the truck into position is the part that takes the time, and how long it takes is decided by your site, not by the driver.
What stops a delivery
A delivery that cannot be completed is the outcome everyone is trying to avoid, and the causes are boringly consistent:
- Ground that will not hold the truck, usually soft ground the buyer had not thought of as soft.
- A pinch point nobody measured, which is almost always the tightest ten feet of a lane that is otherwise wide open.
- Overhead the buyer looked at from the ground instead of from the truck's height.
- Nobody on site with the authority to say where the box goes.
- A spot that turns out to be somewhere the container is not allowed to be.
When a truck cannot unload, it leaves with your container. The trip still happened, the fuel was still burned, and the delivery still has to be scheduled again. That is why we would rather over-ask about your site before you commit than surprise you in your own driveway. If your access is genuinely tight, that is not a dead end. Why delivery is a real cost, not a fee
Everything above is work, and work has a price. A special truck, a driver trained to place a heavy steel box in a spot he has never seen before, fuel, and the time it takes to get in and back out. Delivery is not a surcharge bolted onto the container. It is a second, separate job that has to happen before the container is worth anything to you.

How much room does a shipping container delivery truck need?

How long does shipping container delivery take?
